Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) / Single Hair Extraction
(SHE) / Direct Hair Implant (DHI)


Individual follicular units are harvested through a small circular incision created by a
trephine or similar instrument.

Advantage - It avoids the need for a linear scar

WHY FUE (Indications)

  Patients who have limited hair loss.
  Patients with so short hair that a linear donor scar might become visible.
  In patients, who tend to heal with wide or thickened linear scars.
  In athletes, who must resume full activity immediately after the procedure.
  For patients with an inordinate fear of pain or scars.
  When body or beard serves as a donor area. FUE technique is the only technique
    useful in body hair transplantation.

  Ideal for camouflaging donor scars that cannot be excised

Manual FUE

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
is a method of extracting, or "harvesting"¯ donor hair in a follicular unit hair transplant procedure. In FUE, an instrument is used to make a small, circular incision in the skin around a follicular unit, separating it from the surrounding tissue. The unit is then extracted (pulled) directly from the scalp. During the procedure, patient is fully conscious and can listen to music.

This process is repeated until the hair transplant surgeon has harvested enough follicular units for the planned hair restoration. This process can take 4 6 hrs. The donor wounds, approximately 1-mm in size, completely heal over the course of seven to ten days.

The follicular units are then placed into the recipient sites where they will grow into healthy hair-producing follicles.

Normal hair growth is seen in about 6 to 8 months.
 
Needle Fue

A hypodermic needle is used to perform the extraction. The needle tip is used as a cutting instrument in place of traditional rigid punch.

Disadvantage laborious procedure & time consuming

RESTORATION ROBOTICS

It is an image guided robotic system.

Lack of human control may resolve problem of variability of practitoners skill.

ARTAS system use more than 1mm punches which may produce larger scars and healing complication.

However, most experts maintain that an experienced surgeon of FUE should be present during the procedure, since any error during the procedure can be immediately rectified.


 




Scalp micropigmentation (SMP)


Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) uses a tattoo in a stippling pattern that mimics hair follicles that are cut close to the scalp.This relatively new technique can significantly address the cosmetic problems.


This can be done with the hair remaining long or on a shaved scalp. The density of the stippling does not necessarily match the number of pores that contain the hair in the average adult.

It has now got limited use.
